Virtual Maps you can Touch
Researchers in Greece have developed a new system that converts ideo into virtual, touchable maps for the blind. The three-dimensional maps use force fields to represent walls and roads so he visually impaired can better understand the layout of buildings and cities.
It is an interesting combination of using camera work, computers and haptic technology. Although the focus is currently on creating maps that the blind can use I wonder what else can come of it?
“Force fields” just bring up images of space ships and interstellar travel. More science fiction than anything else, but the science is here, the technology is here. Today.
